Bank of Thailand Retail CBDC Pilot
~10,000 pilot users (Project Inthanon / mBridge)
The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has been among Asia's more active central bank digital currency researchers, participating in Project Inthanon for wholesale interbank settlement and the BIS Innovation Hub's mBridge multi-CBDC cross-border payment pilot alongside HKMA, PBoC, and CBUAE. A limited retail CBDC pilot was conducted with approximately 10,000 volunteer participants through select commercial banks to test programmable-money use cases such as conditional vouchers. Thailand has not committed to a full retail CBDC launch; the BoT's stated posture is research-and-optionality rather than imminent deployment. mBridge has strategic importance for Thailand-China trade settlement.
