ICEA insect protein pilot capacity

~1,200 tonnes/yr pilot output

As ofFY2024 pilot capacity·Sources3·Supporting

The Insect Centre of Excellence in Agriculture (ICEA) at Kasetsart University, together with private-sector partners including Cricket Lab and Bugsolutely, operates pilot black soldier fly (BSF) and cricket-protein production with combined throughput in the range of 1,000-1,500 tonnes per year of dried insect-meal output as of 2024. BSF larvae are processed for aquaculture feed and pet food applications; cricket protein targets pet snack and functional pet food SKUs. The Department of Livestock Development (DLD) approved insect-meal inclusion in feed formulations in 2022 subject to spec compliance, opening commercial off-take. Scale-up to industrial-grade capacity (10,000+ tonnes/yr) remains gated on price-parity with imported fishmeal.

What not to do with it

Pilot-scale dried insect-meal output; not commercial-scale. Includes black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae and house cricket (Acheta domesticus). Excludes whole-insect human-food production.
