PromptPay, Thailand's national instant-payment rail operated by the National ITMX (ITMX) under the supervision of the Bank of Thailand (BOT), processes approximately 50–60 billion transactions per year as of 2023 β€” one of the highest per-capita real-time-payment utilisation rates in Asia. Launched in 2017, PromptPay allows fund transfers using national ID number or mobile phone number as the proxy identifier, eliminating the need to share bank account details. Transaction values range from small peer-to-peer transfers to government disbursements (social welfare payments, COVID stimulus, tax refunds). QR code-based merchant payments (PromptPay QR) have driven adoption among small businesses and hawker vendors.
