Phang Nga lithium-bearing ore reserve

~14.8 Mt ore (0.45% Li)

As of2024 reserve announcement·Sources4·Primary

The Department of Primary Industries and Mines announced a lithium-bearing ore discovery in Takua Thung district, Phang Nga province in January 2024 totalling approximately 14.8 million tonnes of ore at an estimated 0.45% lithium concentration. Initial headlines positioning Thailand as the world's third-largest lithium reserve were later clarified by the Department: the 14.8 Mt is rock-containing-lithium, not pure lithium metal. The reserve is sufficient to produce battery material for an estimated 1 million 50 kWh EVs if developed at the assumed concentration. Mining-permit and refining-infrastructure scoping remain in early stage; environmental and indigenous-community considerations are active workstreams.
